One baleful eye watched as the procession passed, then, as the last one went by, the creature attacked. A paw shot out from beneath the couch and hooked onto a pant leg. The person yelped and tried to back away too quickly, tripping and sprawling over the coffee table in the process. The cat streaked out from hiding and disappeared down the hallway, knocking over a pot of petunias in its haste.
