note #78

Eli moaned and rolled over onto his back. Early morning sun dappled his bed in warm pools on the coverlet. He tossed an arm across his face.

After a few minutes he uttered a curse and drew his arm away. Looking around, he took in the mess amassed over the past few days and the shallow hollow where another body had shared the bed. The filtered sounds of laughter and conversation floated through the door to the accompaniment of clinking dishes and pans.

Sitting up and swinging his legs over the side of the bed, Eli rubbed the heel of one hand into an eye and snagged a pair of pants from the floor. He heaved himself up from the bed and slowly pulled them on. Soft footsteps echoed down the hall and came to a halt outside his door. He zipped up his fly just in time as Galilee poked her head into the room.

She blinked at Eli a moment, taking in his tousled hair and rumpled jeans before softly saying "Breakfast" and padding back to the kitchen.

Eli sighed and rubbed a hand over his face and back through his hair. He grabbed a shirt and headed for the door, the smell of frying bacon enticing him to swifter action.

In the kitchen he found Galilee perched upon a stool at the bar, a butter saturated piece of half eaten toast in one hand, laughing merrily at a disgruntled looking Cor. She glanced at Eli as he wandered in and leaned on the counter next to her. Cor stared down at the eggs frying in the pan, spatula clutched in anticipation.

"He already dropped a pancake," Galilee whispered none too quietly. Eli gave her a mock stern look as Cor glowered darker. She smiled brightly and shrugged.

Eli reached over and grabbed a piece of bacon, then went to make himself a fried egg sandwich.

Cor reached from behind him and dropped the freshly fried egg onto Eli's waiting bread. "I swear she's the most chipper when I'm in the foulest moods," he whispered, poking Eli in the arm and pointing at the now happily humming Galilee swinging her feet and devouring an omelet.

Eli smiled and whispered back "She can't help it, Cor. Besides, you only notice it when you're actually in a bad mood."

Cor smiled back and returned to the stove. Eli took it as a good sign and proceeded to devour the sandwich before Galilee could accost him for whatever task he knew she'd drag him and Cor into that day.
